According to My Dashboard, the top search for my blog this week is “how to say pumpkin in korean.” Really? Has more than one personĀ  actually searched for this? Even if not, I’m a bit curious as to why anyone would want to know how to say “pumpkin” badly enough to make a search for it.

And it’s hobak, by the way. Actually one of the first words in my vocabulary, because for whatever reason, plug my name into a Korean-English dictionary and it comes up with “pumpkin.” Multiple students have discovered this, and always I get, “Teacher, why you pumpkin!” They are never satisfied when I say I really have no connection with this particular vegetable and that their fancy electronic dictionaries are full of lies.

Also, if you call someone a “pumpkin” in Korean it means “ugly.” Watermelons are the pretty fruit. Didn’t you know?
